Little Known Facts! Farming!

by Molly Dibnum-Sioux City Pre-Intelligencer Columnist

  • This week is National Ag Week! It is second in public recognition only to National Dairy Goat Awareness Week, proclaimed by President Reagan in 1988!
  • Ancient Roman soldiers enslaved the children of conquered enemy armies and forced them to walk through fields of crops cutting out weeds!  This barbaric practice continued until 1994!
  •  97% of sheep veterinarians believe that global worming is a serious crisis!
  • St. Isidore is the patron saint of farmers!  People reported seeing angels plowing his fields, which makes him also the patron saint of seasonal labor!
  • St. Isidore is often depicted in a triptych with St. Drogo, the patron saint of coffee shops and with St. Anthony of Padua, patron saint of long-winded conversation!
